Flash Fiction Series Challenge. ‘A Moment Of Fate’ by Denise Kenny

Flash Fiction by definition is a style of fictional literature of extreme brevity. There is no widely accepted definition of the length of flash fiction, although typically it is a piece written under 500 words.  You will find that different publications put different caps on the accepted length, many as low as 100 words! Now that would be a challenge! For my flash fiction challenge though once your entry is under 1000 words that’s fine by me.  I’d hate to put a stop to any creative minds flowing when they started to get going 😉

What I love already about this challenge is seeing the diverse styles of writing that our emerging writers all have.  And this entry from Denise Kenny, titled ‘A moment of fate’, is so beautifully lyrical, it is almost poetry.

A moment of fate By Denise Kenny

“of course I do”, said Patrick, with a glint in his eye.
I remember it clearly, no word of a lie.
‘Twas a long time ago now, his memory recalls,
The music, the tables and those familiar red walls.
The scent in the air, the sweet smell of beer..
How he opened that door and a lady appeared.
“Hello” said the voice, behind a dazzling smile.
Oh her beauty shone deep, like the stars in the sky.
She stepped into the warmth. “Anna is my name”.
Patrick knew in that instant, life would never be the same.
“Can I help you?” he asked, with a curious desire.
“I noticed the sign on your door; Bar staff required”

McSweeney’s Pub and restaraunt, for many locals a home.
where they would gather and have the craic,
Welcomed Anna aboard.
And to this day, still so beautiful..
“I love you”, she said.
He snapped out of his memories and looked at the bed.
“When you opened that door and I saw your face,
I knew the journey that led me to you, was no less than fate.”
“Thank you”, she whispered, “for a lifetime of love,
a hand that brought friendship, a gift from above”.

They had shared wishes and dreams, laughter and tears,
side by side on their journey, conquering their fears.
They had seen the world and it’s glories, sailed far and wide.
They had swam with the dolphins and soared through the skies.
“I wish I could have borne you an heir to the throne,
but life had other plans for us, no child to bring home.
He or she would have been so beautiful, with Daddy’s brown eyes.
A mixture of both of us, so gentle and wise..

She paused. “I am getting tired Paddy”. Her breathing was slow.
Her body was tired, nearly time to go.
“I love you Anne McSweeney. I have since that day.
You bring sunshine into my life in every single way.
“Rest now my love, I am here by your side.”
Oh beautiful Anna, his heart wanted to cry.
He leaned in closely, wiping a tear from her eye,
and kissed her gently; their last goodbye…

Denise Kenny is a 37 yr old Mum of two young children. She started writing poetry as a hobby years ago, with a dream of writing for a greeting card company or writing a children’s book. She has a a collection of 100’s of poems with a very sentimental style of writing.
Denise put that dream on hold when she began her family five years ago and would love to get back into writing again now and see where the journey takes her.
