Book Reviews and Thank Yous!

coverHello

So it’s July 1st and schools out for the summer!  For many of you this means a much easier commute to work every day (traffic gets much lighter with no school runs!) and others will think to themselves not for the first time, that teachers are seriously underpaid as they grapple to find ways to amuse their kids while simultaneously holding onto their sanity!  For me, things are much the same as our two smallies are still preschoolers.  I am loving the summer though, the weather in the main is condusive to much running around the garden, which means smallies falling into bed nice and early with big smiles on their faces.

Anyhow enough of that.  It was suggested to me recently that I should find a way of gathering together all the wonderful reviews that fans of Beyond Graces Rainbow had posted online.  So this evening I did that and by doing so realised all over again how very lucky I am to have such fantastic support from all of you.

This evenings post is really a thank you to everyone who read Graces story and who took both the time and trouble to write a review and quite frankly, I’ll always be grateful.

So for anyone who fancies a nose, below are the reviews that you the readers made.  You guys are legends.

Thank you all,

Carmel xx

This book is by a new author, Carmel Harrington, and is truely an excellent read. It is extremely easy to read and I didn’t want to put it down until I had finished it. The story draws you in, the characters are portrayed so well that the reader feels as if they are friends and really wants to know what will happen to them as the story progresses. I was hooked from the beginning and giggled, laughed and also cried while reading it. I would highly recommend this book.

This book brings you on an emotional journey exploring friendships and family life.

There is a character for everyone, there is always a character you can relate too and brings to life people you have met in life.

A great read and I feel the start of many books for us all to enjoy. I Can’t wait for the next book.

Harrington is definitely a new Irish author to keep an eye on. She has a deep insight into the human
soul and has a unique way of depicting that through words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smiling through the tears…….., April 13, 2013

This book introduces Grace and her wonderful circle of friends. Her battles are also their battles and they share both her victories and her losses as she faces an uphill struggle against cancer. The love of her life and the father of her three year old son is back on the scene having abandoned her because of his drinking and in the midst of all this drama she also searches for her birth mother who has troubles of her own. The characters portrayed in this book are engaging and likeable. They are the kind of people I would like as friends. The author has done a brilliant job of making them memorable and real. If you are looking for a story that can make you smile as well as cry then this is the one for you.

This book was a very pleasant suprise. I expected the usual chick lit, and I wasn’t disappointed. However this story had so much more than the usual predictable storylines. The charachters were well developed and likeable. I could relate to each one, and I found that I cared about what happened to every one of them, and I wanted to be in their circle! This book evoked lots of emotions in me…happiness, laughter, fear, sadness to name a few. I couldn’t put it down, and I felt sad that I had finished it, wishing I could have a few more chapters to continue the enjoyment! I can see a very bright future for this very talented author. A wonderful debut novel. I can’t wait to read the next installment from Carmel.

I LOVED this book. Literally from the first chapter…I was hooked! I never cry at books…movies yes, books no. But Harrington has this gift of sucking you in and you fall in love with the characters despite their flaws, (wish I had a group of friends like them though). They’re like real people with real problems, thoroughly enjoyed the giggles too. What I loved about this book was nothing is sugar coated, you get the good and the bad.
This is a book where you never want to see the final page.
Thank you for giving me this read! Cant wait for the next one!

This review is from: Beyond Grace’s Rainbow (Kindle Edition)

Saw this book mentioned on Goodread’s website so decided to take a look at the sample chapters. Good move on the authors part cos I was hooked by the end of the prologue! Bought the book straight away and couldn’t put it down. I really related to a couple of the characters in the book. We’ve had cancer in our family so the story resonated with me. I loved the way the author managed to draw me into each of the characters lives. I really cared about how things would work out for them all. I love it when a book makes me play a scene in my head and that’s what Beyond Grace’s Rainbow did. I laughed out loud in some places, smiled and giggled in others and if I’m honest cried an ocean in places. It certainly pulls at the heartstrings, definitely have your hankies ready! Happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sinead Moriarty, Marian Keyes, Cathy Kelly, Sophie Kinsella…..Great read.

Once you get into this book (maybe 4 or 5 chapters in) you won’t be able to put it down. All the characters are extremely well portrayed and sympathetically written and you find yourself rooting for each and every one of them. This book has so many twists and turns it will keep you guessing right up until the very end. It tackles a tough subject (cancer in a young Mum) in a very compassionate and understanding way but as my title suggests it will have you in floods so be prepared. Hope to see more by this author very soon!

Came across this book by chance and said I’d give it a go. So glad I did….it was such a good read I couldnt put it down. The author really gets you to get to know the characters as if they were real life people. It has great humour, fun & light heartedness, along with sadness, pain & sorrow. I hope the author has another book in the pipeline and publishes it as I would definitely read it.

I read a lot of books from this genre and it’s been a long time since any book had me sucked in as quickly as this one. I was carried into the story and instantly felt part of the ‘gang’ of characters, finding something in each of them that I identified with. It was such a good read that I had to force myself to stop reading so that I didn’t finish it quite so quickly. I was torn between wanting to get to the end and wanting to draw it out so that the characters would be part of my day for a little longer!
Fabulous read, fantastically written and can’t wait to see more from this author! It’s definitely one I’ll recommend to my friends!

This review is from: Beyond Grace’s Rainbow (Kindle Edition)

Beyond Grace’s Rainbow follows the life of Grace Devlin and her friends and family as they struggle to deal with Grace’s cancer diagnosis. Mother to three year old Jack, Grace’s world is turned upside down when she is told she will need a bone marrow transplant. Her ex-boyfriend Liam returns to her life to futher complicate matters, not having seen his son due to his drink problem. A tentative reconcilliation is forged when Grace learns of his spell in rehab and his promise to be there for her and Jack. Her colourful collection of friends not only support her at this time but have their own difficulties to deal with: Tara and Sean are struggling to conceive; Tom worries about his partner’s diet and Abbey just wants to find Mr. Right. When the need for a transplant becomes apparent, Grace finds herself tracing her birth mother; an act which plunges the friends into a search for her father which will change the lives of those involved forever.

This is a touching, beautifully written novel which engages the reader from start to finish. The characters are lively and interesting and the reader is compelled to find out what will happen to the protagonist and her group of loyal friends. A word of warning! Tissues required!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational, 29 April 2013

Pajama Book Girl (Liverpool) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Beyond Grace’s Rainbow (Kindle Edition)

Beyond Grace’s Rainbow follows Grace Devlin through her fight with Leukemia. She is an honest, clever, and charming lady who has you loving her from the very start. Throughout her story you get to meet the people in her life, her beloved group of friends and her family. With them you get not only their side to her story, but their own stories too. Her friends consist of, Tom and Gerry her two gay friends, who are without a doubt the most romantic and gorgeous couple ever. Tom is the dad of the whole group and Gerry is the drama queen with a huge heart. Tara is Grace’s cousin, she is the mouth and the hard-faced one, she is married to Grace’s long-term karaoke friend the lovely Dr,Sean. Lastly, we have Abbie, she is the art chick with a shy smile, a gorgeous face and a metabolism we all dream about, she also has a tendency to pick very crap boyfriends. All together they are a force to be reckoned with. A gang of pure love. Grace has a son Jack who she seriously dotes on. When Jacks father Liam (the love of her life) turns up out of the blue one day, her feathers are well and truly ruffled. We also get to meet a lady named Catherine and told her incredible journey in life, but I won’t go into detail about her she’s one for you to find out about yourself.

All I can say about this book is that you will not be disappointed when you read it. It is a tale of heartache, mystery, love, devastation, life and relationships. A book that will have you giggling and excited, but will also have you crying and questioning how things in life can change so suddenly. It has been told in such a wonderful way, a way where you are pulled into the words. You don’t become a part of the book like some you read, but miraculously you become a friend of the author. Now I know that seems a strange thing to say, but you really do feel like you are sitting with her listening to her as she explains the tale of grace’s life to you. Like this is real life and grace is her family. That is something I’ve never experienced before and my swinging brick thawed slightly allowing a warmth to take over me, allowing me to live that reality with her. It made me become very aware of my own family, friends, children, and husband. How blessed I am, how blessed we all are. I will never look at a rainbow in the same way again.

I can hand on my heart honestly say that this book has blown me away. Treat yourself to it. It’s not just for us chick-lit ladies. It’s for everyone who enjoys a good read and a brilliant book. It’s Sensational.

I really enjoyed this eBook. It was an easy read, one that I finished in a few days, I found it hard to put down.
The author has a knack of making you feel connected with the characters. I both cried and laughed throughout the story. A well written, witty, amusing story and most definitely a tearjerker.
Will be watching out for more from this author.
