15 days till I stand on stage in the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, to perform my piece ‘The Places You’ll Go’, as part of the Under My Bed event.
15 days till I find out how good my nerves of steel really are when under the hot bright lights of the theatre.
My piece, five minutes long takes me back to the 1980’s, to my childhood. And while it sounds only fecking brilliant here in my sitting room, with only the kids toys listening to me; as my Irish stage debut gets closer, my nerves are doubling!
What if I stand on the stage and freeze? What if I forget my lines? What if I trip and fall flat on my face, just like I do in my nightmares?
Nope, I have to believe that it will be all right on the night.
The stage bloopers that happened to these won’t be my fate. No way.
The event runs for three nights, with a host of Irish personalities all doing their thang to help raise much needed funds for Barnardos charity. If you would like to find out for yourself if I manage to pull this off, then please come along and help this fab charity at the same time.
Once my piece is done, you’ll find me in the bar, clutching a glass of brandy for dear life.

12th – 14th March 2015
Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin
Nightly at 7:30pm
Every child has a space under their bed which can be a stash for their secret things, a hiding place for their favourite loot or where they find long-lost toys. For other children, it can be where they hide from whoever they are afraid of. It is a very personal mental and physical space and sanctuary for children.
Under my Bed invited well-known people from all walks of life to tell us what was under their bed as a child.
In January 2014, over 3 nights in one special theatre, these stories were told. The event raised €13,155.70 in total, and every cent raised went directly to funding the invaluable work of Barnardos, Ireland’s leading children’s charity. Each year they work with children and families throughout Ireland.
The best thing about the project was the good vibes that surrounded it – the writers, actors, audience, crew, producers – were all so positive about their participation and the end result. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to create this good will again in 2015.
Break a leg Carmel. I have put the date in my diary and will find you at the bar
